In the fall of 2011 Common Thread Chorus and the music school at West Neighbourhood House created Common Thread Kids as a collaborative pilot project. During the first season children met monthly for informal musical sessions, but the project quickly evolved and by the third season the children’s choir was confirmed as a weekly ongoing program by both WNH and Common Thread.
CT Kids welcomes children 6-13. No auditions or former musical experience are required. The choir rehearses from September to June each Monday from 4:30pm-5:30pm at WNH, 248 Ossington Avenue at Dundas. Parents are welcome to stay during rehearsals. Fees for singers are based on a sliding scale. No child is ever turned away because of a family’s inability to pay.
The repertoire is chosen from a variety of genres and languages keeping in mind the goal of CT to encourage the children’s vocal and social development as well as their social consciousness. Each season CT Kids sing at WNH events and with the adult Common Thread choir in some of their concerts.
